This huge dark space is the massive circular bulb shaped construction which
comprises the main exhaust cooler. The walkable part of the interior of the cell ends
with these concentric circular rings. The cooled exhaust gases pass through this to the
other half of the exhaust cooler where there are more flame traps before entering the final
section of pipe where it joins the suction mains.
The small ladder allows you to climb up onto the centre ring.
